Amanda Lowe, intrepid explorer is walking from Land’s End to John O’ Groats
Summer 2019 – I packed up my stuff, got rid of my house, sold the old car and spent a few months walking from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.
On the way, I met up with local folk musicians, asked them to teach me their favourite tune, and tell me the story of why they love that tune.
I documented the whole journey, blogging, recording and writing down, and this blog tells of my adventures.
Who is Amanda Lowe?
I’ve been a street entertainer, an artist, a circus performer, a musician, I’ve been in bands and worked as a solo performer, I’ve taught children and adults lots of things, I’ve had two books published, and seven CDs, I’ve juggled, eaten fire, toured internationally, been a medieval musician, a supply teacher, a hypnotherapist, a writer, a bar manager, a burger van cook, a key-note speaker, delivered arts projects in schools and corporate environments.
I have recently written songs about the untold stories of Hull, and earned great acclaim with my Amy Johnson Song Cycle. I’ve dipped my tongue into Duchamp’s Urinal to compose two songs about toilets. ;
I’ve spent my whole working life making art and music, writing, collaborating, in many different styles.
I’m Amanda Lowe – itinerant artiste and musician. One of life’s creative butterflies.
Examples of Work
Some examples of my work over the years:

This is the blog site of the Amy Johnson Song Cycle – a commission I had from Hull City of Culture Amy Johnson Festival. I blogged the writing of the tunes, assembled an all-female group of musicians and performed the song-cycle as part of the festival.

This is the blog site of a personal project I undertook last year – travelling from Land’s End to John O’Groats, collecting music and stories from traditional musicians I met on the way

‘Echoes of the Silk Road’ features arrangements and interpretations of music inspired by the incredible fusion of cultures, religions, lifestyles found along the Silk Road. This project was inspired by research into the history of the instrument I play – the Hammered Dulcimer. Celtarabia is a cross cultural world music band set up originally by myself and Quentin Budworth. It has been performing for over twenty years.
This is the historical performance group I set up – for over thirty years we have performed historical and themed entertainment in a wide variety of settings. Shows, dances, projects.
